This is the worst game I have ever tried to play. The worst part, you can only play online with other players. There is no tutorial or help screens. Forget about any type of instructions, you are on your own. Also as a parent be aware, this means that you hear the online chat happening while the game is being played. Some of the language is.salty and inappropriate.
The swap over to throw grenades doesn't seem to be as fluid as the earlier versions but is a handicap shared by all. I started playing Socom with the first installment and loved it so grabbed Socom 2 when it came out and love it as well. I have always liked the 3rd person better personally. Socom focuses solely on direct character to character fighting and doesn't rely on these types of add ons. People moving over should expect way more calculated game play. There do seem to be some cons with Socom Confrontation. In the original games the only reason I played the offline version of the game was to unlock items for the online version anyways. I know there has been some grumbling about this but it didn't bother me and also led to a low price.
Socom for me was always all about online play.People attempting to move over from "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" or "Call of Duty: World at War" will find a very different type of online play. The first most obvious difference being that Socom is set up 3rd person and COD is first person. Contrary to all the hate, I actually love Socom Confrontation. On COD I only found mics used for personal diatribes and sharing of rap music (whether you wanted to hear it or not). COD incorporates lots of things based on kill streaks like dogs and air strikes etc. I would also have to say that Socom must be more difficult as it would be very difficult to get a 7 kill streak and people on COD seem to do it all the time. Some of the older maps that you loved have been added such as Desert Glory, Frost Fire, Desert Glory, Blizzard and Vigilance. There were a lot of bugs reported at first and the lack of a map pack that was promised but these items seem to have been dealt with.Overall: If you like Socom 1 and 2 you are going to like this.
Socom 3 was where the franchise when down hill for me as the attempt to incorporate vehicles led to maps that were way too sprawling and expansive and also led to my hesitancies about buying this version (Well, that and not having a PS3).For those who don't know Socom Confrontation is online game play only. The load times between games can seem to take a bit sometimes. The game play on Socom also seems to require more strategy than COD as you always work on a team. Also a lot of the people on Socom will actually use their mics to help the game. The online menu was a little confusing at first but once you know where you are going it isn't a problem. If you liked those pick this up and give it a try.
Slant Six is filled with amateur developers. Zipper Interactive made all of the SOCOMs on PS2. Slant Six did Confrontation. They messed up so many things that it doesn't feel like SOCOM anymore.I would love to go into detail, but I don't want to type all day.Go to YouTube and check out a series of videos entitled "SOCOM IS DEAD". The guy who made the vids shows you all the reasons why SOCOM on the PS3 is DEAD.
Right off the bat there are problems:Semi-long installation times500MBish patch to downloadRepetitive game types, weapons, etc.Graphics look horrible and textures are second to cr@pAiming is off, corner shoot doesn't really work, weapons switching is a painCharacter designs look like mannequins, awfully genericPlease, don't buy this game.Refer to YouTube video: SOCOM IS DEAD
Glant Six Killed Socom.I have been a huge SOCOM fan ever since the the first game on PS2, but Confrontation is by far and is the worst and most embarrassing game of the SOCOM series. It took two hours to download the updates, while I waited and then come to find out you can only play it online against other gamers. No story mode, WTF.I'll always read the reviews before buying another game. For me socom is dead
